Gambling online in South Africa

Online gambling has been declared illegal in South Africa. The North Gauteng High Court has pronounced online gambling to be illegal in the country on the African continent. This declaration was made last week. Also last week, the South African gambling and casino regulator, called the de Gauteng Gambling Board, officially  announced they support the new regulation. Operators who provide casino and gambling services on the internet risc to be prosecuted. Also, players of fruit machines and other casino games online, providers and marketeers who facilitate gambling and online casino´s, can also be prosecuted.
Violators of the new internet gambling related law can be find to a maximum ammount of €1.072.386. They also risk a sentence for a maximum of ten years in prison, are a fine and a prison sentence. Operators who are in violation of the law also may not be able or allowed to participate in the run on online gambling licenses.
Earlier this month it was announced that Betfair was considering to aply for a gambling in South Africa.  Ladbrokes has allready asked for a license to operate in the country. Until 1996, South Africa only had a limited number of gambling games. In the year 1996 the National Gambling Act was introduced in the country, which led to licensed casino’s and a national lotery.
The South African Governement hopes to able to control the online gambling industry more, and to make it less a business that´s out of view of official parties. Also it is expected to lead to a decrease in the number of gambling addicts.
